Applique and Embroidery
Silk and Wool and Metal
Circa 1920s
It’s the early 20th century. Women get the right to vote, choose short bob haircuts and an entirely new approach to fashion is born. The influences of Asian art, Modernism, and the exotic esthetic of the Ballet Russes combine to bring forth a whole new look. Nowhere is it more apparent than with embellishments to European and American couture. Embroidery from France, Austria and Switzerland sets a chic new standard for fashion.
Now at the start of the 21st century, in the eternal revolving cycle of style, exoticism and embellishment are back. The Design Library has recently acquired a leading private archive of early 20th century embroideries. We are proud to offer these beautiful and wildly varied designs to Design Library clients.
